Some children at an early stage are taught the difference between letter sounds and letter names . How ever upon entering grade 1 in school the focus shifts to writing and reading becomes only a partial concern . The challenge with this shift of focus is that even though children are taught the sounds individually , they are not taught how to connect sounds to form words and develop comprehension skills . Resulting in many trying to by-heart short words .

Thinking along these lines are not practical as the English language has over 170,000 words – many having a complicated mix of sounds and silent letters . Unless children are taught to decipher such patterns at an early stage; their understanding , reading and speaking ability is significantly affected .

Just think about it for a second …. If you were to read the word “ bag” using letters it would sound something like this බි- ඒ- ජි . As you say the letter names out loud , can you hear the word you are trying to say ? No , this would be impossible .

How ever ,if you say the correct sounds attributed to those letters , then it becomes easy to connect and decipher the word . for e.g. බ-ඇ-ග්. In English we call this phonetics . The 26 letters in the alphabet have close to 44 different sounds and it is crucial that your child be taught to understand all of them .

Now some schools , do teach children letter sounds . Unfortunately what is taught is inadequate , or the sounds are limited to only consonant and short vowel letters. Long vowels sounds , digraphs , blends etc. are not discussed and this affects the child’s ability to read longer words .
